アルバイトの記憶【大学時代】
大学時代、僕はいくつかのアルバイトをしました。今日は大学時代にしたアルバイトの話をします。まずは大学1年生の時の話からします。大学1年生の10月～12月にかけて、僕は友達といっしょに「お供え餅の工場」での単発バイトを数回しました。
どういうアルバイトかというと、まず、大学の前にマイクロバスが来ていて、そのバスに乗って村松町という所まで約1時間バスで移動します。午後4時半すぎくらいに工場に到着して、それから約5時間、工場でお供え餅のラインのアルバイトをします。
バイトの作業は何種類かあって、その日の「運」で仕事内容が決まります（工場の偉い人が大学生である僕らに仕事内容を振り分けます）。工場の流れ作業で5時間休憩なしでひたすら働きます。一番楽な仕事は、ベルトコンベアにお供え餅が流れてきて、そのお供え餅の上に飾りみたいなものを乗っけるだけ、めちゃくちゃ楽な仕事です。1回だけ僕はその仕事をしたことがありますが、かなり楽でした。 一方、ハズレの仕事は、トレーに餅がいくつも乗っかっているのですが、そのトレーをひたすら持ち上げて近くにある棚に乗せ換えるという、体力が必要な仕事です。5時間延々と立ち作業で力仕事、おまけに休憩なし、誰と話すこともなくひたすら働く…先輩はこの餅屋のバイトのことを「自分との闘いのバイト」と言っていました。
このトレーがけっこう重くて、腰をひねりながらトレーを棚に乗せ換えるため、当時体力には自信があった僕でも5時間この仕事を終えると足と腰が悲鳴をあげていました。バイト料は5時間働いて5,000円。日払いの仕事だったので、バイトの帰りにバスの中で封筒に入った5,000円をもらっていました。当時貧乏だった僕は日給5,000円のこの仕事をメインにしたかったのですが、あまりにもの孤独とつらさに結局1年生のときは5回くらいしかできませんでした。
2年生のときも5回くらい。季節限定のバイトだったので10月になると友達と「餅屋のバイトどうする？行く？」と言っていました。 …今やれと言われても絶対にしたくありません。それくらいにハードでつらいバイトでした。
新潟競馬場での警備のアルバイトも数回しました。このバイトも1年生のときだけ数回しました。警備会社の制服を着て、競馬場の中や外で警備（見張り役みたいなバイト）を朝9時～夕方5時まで、1か所に立ちっぱなしのバイトです。
このバイトも苦痛でした。2時間くらい立っていると、腰が痛くなってきて（あまり腰が強くありませんでした）誰とも話すこともできず、変化のないバイトでした。このバイトも大変でした。日給8,000円くらいだったと思います。
大学2年生の4月～大学3年生の終わりまで続いたバイトは学習塾での非常勤講師のバイトでした。このバイトだけは楽しく、大学の先輩もいたのと、あとは小学校の教員を目指していた僕には大変勉強になるバイトでした。
中学生に英語と数学を教える仕事です。クラス授業をする仕事で1クラス10人くらいの生徒さんに勉強を教えていました。今の僕の寺子屋学習館での仕事の原点になっている仕事でした。
時給1,500円～2,000円くらいだったと思います。三条市という所に塾があって、電車を乗り換えて片道1時間かけて通っていました。週に3回していました。この非常勤講師のバイトは貴重でした。
大学3年生のときは「コンサート会場のセットの設営・警備」のバイトを2回のみしました。香西かおり（演歌歌手）のコンサートが新潟県民会館であって、その舞台のセットの設営のバイトです。演歌歌手のセットだったため、簡素なセットで体力仕事でしたが友達もいたので苦痛ではありませんでした。コンサートは昼・夜2回公演です。公演の時間が近づくと外の駐車場へ行き、車の交通整理をしました。これが大変で、次から次から来る車の列を駐車場に停めるように指示するという仕事でした。半分パニック状態になりながら必死に働いていました。
このコンサートのバイトも日給8,000円だったと思います。学生課のアルバイト紹介コーナーへ行き、単発バイトのコーナーでコンサート会場の設営単発バイトを見つけて応募しました。
夏休み・冬休み・春休みに富山に帰省してきたときは、大学1年生～3年生まで、今はもう閉鎖してしまいましたが、当時は富山県で大手だった学習塾で中学生に「夏期講習」「冬期講習」「春期講習」の非常勤講師のバイトをしました。
僕は「季節販売」というニックネームで富山に帰省してくるたびに、このバイトをしていました。楽しかったです。
大学4年生のときに2回だけした単発バイトは「交通量調査」のバイトです。このバイトは12時間労働で、いすに座って道路を通過する車の台数を1時間単位で数えるという単純なバイトでした。ただ、12時間労働だったので拘束時間の長い孤独なバイトでした。日給12,000円くらいだったと思います。秋にこのバイトを2回したのですが、夕方になると寒くて半分ふるえながら車の数を数えていました。
今こうして振り返ると「孤独」「単純な」「苦痛を伴う」バイトばかりしていたような気がします。塾のバイトだけは大変だった中にも「楽しさ」のあった仕事でしたが、あとは「働くって大変だなぁ」と毎回思いながら働いていました。
働くことは大変なことですね。お金をもらうのだから当たり前といえば当たり前なのですが、世の中にはいろんな仕事があるなと実感した大学時代でした。
